This is how my mum would pack; stuffing a set of towels in a beach-bag last minute, tied by its handles to the hand luggage. Because you never know! Clearly prepared for anything, she pulls out a neatly folded plastic bag so she can put her feet on the seat opposite her. Seat number four claimed. I smile openly now. Who cares.
